For our valued MRCOOL DIY Direct customers, it's essential to stay up-to-date with the latest changes in HVAC efficiency standards, as they can impact both your home comfort and energy savings.
As of January 1st, 2023, new national efficiency standards, known as SEER2 (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) and HSPF2 (Heating Seasonal Performance Factor), have come into effect. These updated standards represent a significant shift in how heating, ventilation, and air conditioning units are regulated, similar to the efficiency upgrades that occurred in 2015. Whether you're installing new units or replacing existing ones, these changes apply across the board.
Here’s an overview of how the new SEER2 and HSPF2 standards specifically impact MRCOOL DIY Direct products and what they mean for you:
Northern States
- Air Conditioning Units & Heat Pumps: The new minimum efficiency is 13.4 SEER2.
- Heat Pumps: Must now achieve 14.3 SEER2 and 7.5 HSPF2.
- Installation Considerations: Units manufactured before January 1st, 2023, may still be eligible for installation under the previous standards.
Southern (Southeastern) States
- Split Systems: The efficiency requirement has increased to 14.3 SEER2 for both air conditioning units and heat pumps, with heat pumps also needing to meet 7.5 HSPF2.
- Packaged Units: These must meet 13.4 SEER2 and 6.7 HSPF2.
- Compliance: All units installed after January 1st, 2023, must meet these updated standards.
Southwestern States
- Split Systems: Must meet 14.3 SEER2 for air conditioning. Additionally, there’s a new EER2 benchmark of 11.7 for systems under 45,000 BTUH and 11.2 for those above.
- Heat Pumps: Must align with the national standard of 14.3 SEER2 and 7.5 HSPF2.
- Packaged Units: Require 13.4 SEER2, 10.6 EER2, and 6.7 HSPF2 for compliance.
