Understanding the New 2023 Efficiency Standards: A Guide for MRCOOL DIY Direct Customers

For our valued MRCOOL DIY Direct customers, it's important to stay informed about the evolving landscape of HVAC efficiency standards.

As of January 1st, 2023, new efficiency standards known as SEER2 and HSPF2 have been implemented, marking a significant shift in the requirements for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning units. This change is akin to the efficiency increase that took place in 2015 and affects all equipment, regardless of whether it's intended for installation in new constructions or as replacements in existing structures.

Here’s a tailored overview of the new efficiency regulations specific to MRCOOL DIY Direct products and how they might impact you:
**Northern States:** All types of systems provided by MRCOOL DIY Direct must now achieve a minimum efficiency of 13.4 SEER2 for air conditioning units and heat pumps, and 14.3 SEER2 and 7.5 HSPF2 for heat pumps specifically. Products manufactured before January 1st, 2023, may still be eligible for installation.
**Southern (Southeastern) States:** For split systems, the minimum efficiency requirement has increased to 14.3 SEER2 for both air conditioning units and heat pumps, with heat pumps also needing to meet the 7.5 HSPF2 standard. This 7.5 HSPF2/14.3 SEER2 requirement for heat pumps is now a national benchmark. Packaged units must achieve 13.4 SEER2 and 6.7 HSPF2. All units installed post-January 1st, 2023, are required to comply with these updated standards.
**Southwestern States:** The efficiency minimum for split systems also rises to 14.3 SEER2 for air conditioning, introducing a new benchmark for EER2—11.7 for systems under 45,000 BTUH and 11.2 EER2 for those above. Heat pumps are aligned with the national standard of 14.3 SEER2 and 7.5 HSPF2. For packaged units, the criteria are 13.4 SEER2, 10.6 EER2, and 6.7 HSPF2. Compliance with these standards is mandatory for all installations after January 1st, 2023.
At MRCOOL DIY Direct, we are committed to ensuring that our products not only meet but exceed these new regulatory standards, providing our customers with energy-efficient, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly solutions for their heating and cooling needs.
