The DIY Hybrid™ Ducted AH is a central, ducted indoor unit that connects to a DIY multi-zone condenser with control-wire communication and pre-charged line sets.
It gives you the comfort of a central system and the flexibility to add wall or cassette mini-split handlers on the same outdoor unit.
One zone can be a full central ducted air handler (24k or 36k), while the other zones are mini-split air handlers (wall or recessed ceiling cassette).
Everything communicates over low-voltage control wiring and operates as a single multi-zone system.
Size by the combined BTUs of all indoor units (central ducted + satellites).
Example: 24k central + 9k wall + 12k cassette = 45k BTU total.
Choose the smallest MRCOOL® DIY multi-zone condenser whose capacity is ≥ total BTUs.
Yes—Hybrid lets you build larger loads as long as your combined BTUs fit a compatible multi-zone condenser and available ports.
For instance, a 36k central ducted zone plus additional indoor capacity around 24k (e.g., two 12k rooms) totals ~60k BTU;
you’d select a condenser that meets or exceeds that total. When in doubt, we’ll size it for you.
Up to three satellite air handlers: wall-mounted or recessed ceiling cassettes in 6k, 9k, 12k, and 18k.
Each satellite requires its own pre-charged DIY line set.
Yes. These are fully pre-charged with refrigerant, you just make all the connections and open the refrigerant valves, no vacumming needed as they are factory pre-charged with R-454B.
The ducted Air Handler installs like a conventional air handler (ducts, condensate, control wiring, and electrical).
Yes—an optional heat kit provides emergency/aux heat for colder snaps, controlled via the thermostat so it only activates when needed.
