RV air conditioner power planning starts with the exact equipment specification, then expands to the RV's wiring, protective devices and all other loads that may operate at the same time. For the current MRCOOL TravelCool system, the customer-facing electrical specification is AC115V 60Hz. That does not mean every household receptacle, shore-power pedestal, generator or inverter is automatically suitable.
This guide deliberately does not publish a generic generator wattage, startup-watt figure or battery-bank size. The official TravelCool sources do not provide one universal number for every installation and supporting power source. Use the current product nameplate and installation manual, then verify the complete RV electrical system with qualified help.
Start with the documented TravelCool supply
The current TravelCool brochure and storefront specification identify AC115V 60Hz power. The installation manual directs the installer to verify that the nameplate voltage matches the available supply before connection. That nameplate and the latest model-specific documentation should govern the final installation.
Voltage and frequency are only the first checks. Wiring condition, conductor sizing, grounding, circuit protection, connection method and the capacity remaining after other RV loads are all part of the plan.
Why a dedicated circuit matters
The official TravelCool installation manual calls for a dedicated air-conditioner circuit operating at rated voltage. It also calls for leakage-current protection and an air circuit breaker with magnetic short-circuit and thermal overload protection. The current manual recommends a 16A air circuit breaker, while directing installers to follow local and national wiring regulations and the markings on the relevant controller or fuse holder.
A recommendation in a manual is not permission to replace or modify RV electrical equipment without checking the actual installation. Only qualified personnel should connect the rooftop air conditioner to the power supply, and the current manual and equipment nameplate should be checked again at installation time.
Grounding and wiring considerations
TravelCool is a Class I appliance and requires reliable grounding. The manual directs the installer to connect the air conditioner's grounding conductor securely to the vehicle grounding system. It also warns against routing loose or coiled cable beside conductive material and requires protection from sharp edges, vibration, corrosion, pressure and other conditions common in a moving vehicle.
The manual further requires an all-pole disconnect in fixed wiring and says the power cord must be replaced by MRCOOL, an authorized service agent or similarly qualified personnel if damaged. These are installation-safety requirements, not optional accessories.
Shore-power planning
When the RV is connected to shore power, verify more than the pedestal label. Confirm that the RV distribution system can supply the TravelCool circuit at the required voltage and frequency while the other expected loads are operating. Water heating, cooking equipment, battery charging and other appliances can change the available capacity.
Inspect the condition and rating of the pedestal connection, cord, adapters, transfer equipment and RV panel. Avoid assuming that an adapter increases available electrical capacity. If voltage stability, grounding or circuit capacity is uncertain, stop and have the system evaluated before operating the air conditioner.
Generator considerations
The official TravelCool customer documents do not state one universal minimum generator wattage. A generator decision must account for the exact TravelCool electrical data, generator continuous and transient capability, output quality, altitude or temperature derating, wiring, connection equipment and all simultaneous RV loads.
Do not select a generator from cooling capacity in BTU. BTU describes thermal capacity, not electrical input. Do not convert the advertised 15,000 BTU cooling capacity into an assumed wattage requirement, and do not add an invented startup multiplier.
Inverter and battery-system considerations
TravelCool uses inverter-driven compressor technology, meaning compressor operation can adjust with comfort demand instead of relying only on fixed-speed cycling. That product feature does not establish the rating required for a separate RV inverter or battery system.
A supporting inverter must be evaluated for compatible AC output, continuous capacity, transient response and connection requirements. Battery planning must also account for usable energy, voltage, current limits, wiring, overcurrent protection, conversion losses, charging source and desired runtime. Because the official TravelCool documents do not publish a universal battery or external-inverter specification, this guide does not invent one.
Startup behavior and soft-start assumptions
Do not assume a startup-watt value solely because TravelCool is inverter-driven, and do not assume that a third-party soft-start device is required or compatible. The current official documents should be used for the exact unit, and any supporting device should be verified separately with its manufacturer and the RV electrical professional responsible for the installation.
A practical pre-installation checklist
- Confirm the exact TravelCool model and customer-facing AC115V 60Hz specification.
- Read the latest nameplate and Installation & Owner's Manual before connection.
- Verify the dedicated circuit, grounding and protective devices.
- Inspect cable routing for sharp edges, heat, vibration and hidden vehicle wiring.
- List every other RV load expected to run at the same time.
- Evaluate shore power, generator or inverter equipment using current manufacturer data—not BTU-based assumptions.
- Use qualified electrical or RV service support when any capacity, wiring or compatibility question remains.
